As they prepare for their journeys in higher education beyond Grand & Warren, Prep students traveled to Long Island University in Brooklyn on Saturday, September 28 for The Annual New York Black College Expo.
This event provided an opportunity for them to meet with Admission Officers from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and other universities, learn about scholarship and financial aid opportunities, and explore different types of universities as they prepare for the college application process.
“The NY Black College Expo offers a unique opportunity for high school students to explore educational options and discover the rich history and vibrant culture of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs),” Ms. Dalma Santana, Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, who accompanied the students that day along with Ms. Yajaira Pons, College Counselor, said.

“HBCUs provide diverse academic programs and majors, allowing students to find the perfect fit for their interests and goals. In addition, HBCUs are known for their strong sense of community, providing students with a supportive environment where they can thrive academically and personally,” she continued. “HBCUs have a rich history of empowering Black students and communities. You can learn about their legacy and experience their unique cultural heritage by attending an HBCU College Expo.”
We especially congratulate senior Joshua Callwood, ’25, who secured admission to Long Island University on the spot with a scholarship for the Class of 2029.
Ninety-nine-percent of Prep graduates enroll in 4-year colleges and universities. Eighty-nine-percent of the Class of 2024 received a college scholarship.
