William Dwyer, ’91 was recently promoted from Captain to Rear Admiral in the United States Coast Guard during a frocking ceremony at Coast Guard headquarters in Washington. He has also been invested as Chief Prosecutor of the U.S. Coast Guard.
Admiral Dwyer is the first-ever officer to serve in this role; the office of Chief Prosecutor was created for each branch of the military by the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) of 2022. Overseeing a team of attorneys called the special trial counsel, the Chief Prosecutor will both try cases against military personnel, and also review evidence and investigations to determine whether to prosecute service members for serious offenses, independent of the chain of command.
Admiral Dwyer is a graduate of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, Rutgers Law School, the Army War College and Naval Postgraduate School. Before this latest appointment, he had most recently served as the Coast Guard’s Chief of Maritime and Operational Law.
