Taking part in one of the Exchange programs is an exciting and unique opportunity for students during their time at Prep. The Exchange Programs offer firsthand experience with the language and culture and allow students to create friendships overseas that last a lifetime. The inner growth, maturity and cultural awareness that students experience are immeasurable.

Machu Picchu, Cusco, Peru

A Prep family hosts each foreign exchange student for their stay in the U.S. which ensures the best opportunity for our guests to practice speaking English, to experience the American culture, and to get to know their American friends. Each Exchange program welcomes our guests at different times during the school year for approximately two weeks. Our visitors take part in our normal, everyday life and are part of their host student’s family for the duration of their stay. While in the U.S., the foreign exchange students attend classes at Prep, shadowing their Prep hosts. Large-group activities are also planned so that all of the hosting responsibilities do not fall entirely upon the individual families.

The various exchanges programs have been implemented and successfully run for more than 30 years at Prep, which now include Germany, Italy, France and Spain. While hosting our visitors stateside, these exchanges have included visits to the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, the United Nations, Broadway plays, the MOMA, the Guggenheim and other museums.

During our time abroad, the families of our foreign exchange students then host our Prep students, with whom they experience many aspects of the culture in addition to attending classes at our partnering schools. The travel takes place for two weeks in the spring (France, Italy, & Spain) or the summer (Germany, & Peru).

The cost of the program varies from year to year depending on the currency exchange rate and the cost of flights. The price includes the entire package of airfare and events both in Europe and here in the US, which is received in installments with the final balance due before departure to the foreign country.

The Language Exchange Programs are open to sophomores, juniors and seniors while they are currently enrolled in a modern language class of the language of the program to which they are applying; the Summer Exchange Programs are open to all students regardless of year and language of study. Past summer courses have included travel to Pacuare, Costa Rica and Taipei, Taiwan. The group size is normally limited to twenty students. Grades, discipline, and extracurricular involvement are important factors in the decision-making process, along with the input of faculty and school administrators.

Although the exchange requires some sacrifice, i.e. advanced planning of schoolwork and assignments, additional planning for after-school events, the Modern Language Department and coordinators, along with the students who have participated in the past, can speak to the fact that the rewards of growth, maturity and knowledge far outweigh any inconveniences.
