Head Coach: Pat Laguerre
Prep baseball’s program is spearheaded by head coach Pat Laguerre. Coach Laguerre draws from his extensive experience after 13 years as the head coach at St. Mary’s High School in Jersey City. He is a 3-time Star-Ledger Coach of the Year and has also served as a coach for the Jersey City Junior Olympics, Jersey City RBI, and Jersey City Sharks teams. Athletic Director Rich Hansen is enthusiastic at the prospect of working with Coach Laguerre, “It is exciting to have coach on board. He brings a wealth of experience and a great passion for the game to our program. I look forward to helping him build our program into a consistent state contender.”
Varsity Assistant Coaches: Wilmer Mendez, Joe Vesey, Brian Callahan, Dave Weber
Wilmer Mendez was a two year starter at Sussex Community College. While there as a player, he led the team to a regular season title in 2005 and to the regional finals in 2005 and 2006. He then went on to Bloomfield College where he was also a two year starter for coach Matt Belford. Mendez began his high school coaching career at his alma mater Ferris High School under the guidance of legendary coach Mike Hogan. His duties included organizing practices and coaching their legion teams in the summer. Mendez then went on to become an assistant coach at St. Mary’s where his responsibilities included coaching the infielders and organizing practices. As part of the Marauder staff, Mendez leans on his baseball expertise and great work ethic to guide young players.
Joe Vesey began his coaching career guiding young men in the Cal Ripken League from 2003 to 2008. While coaching there, he led his teams to numerous state championships and countless regional appearances. He also was a part of the Jersey City Diamond Dawg coaching staff that won the Regional RBI Championship and qualified to compete in the Nationals held in Los Angeles, California. Coach Vesey joined Coach Laguerre’s staff in the spring of 2008 at St. Mary’s. As part of this year’s staff, Coach Vesey will handle the outfield duties.
Brian Callahan played his high school ball at Bayonne High School under the guidance of Phil Baccarella. From there, he went on to play at St. Peter’s College under the direction of Bruce Sabbatini. He was named to the All-MAAC Academic team in 1996. Following his playing days he became an assistant at St. Peter’s College from 1997-98. He then went on to coach at Ferris High School in 1999. He was hired as the head baseball coach at NJIT in 2000. He led the Highlanders to a CACC Regular Season Championship in 2003 and an ECAC Championship in 2006. He also guided the team to a school-record 27 wins in 2006. “Coach Cal” joined Coach Laguerre’s staff in 2011 as the pitching and catching coach. As a member of the Marauder varsity staff, Coach Callahan will bring his experience and expertise to guide a group of young and talented Prep catchers.
Dave Weber was born and raised in Jersey City. Coach Weber attended Marist High School where he was a 3-year All-County player. He guided his Marist teams to two County Championships and one State Championship. His performance on the mound also earned All-State honors his junior and senior years. After his senior year he was drafted in the 30th round by the Chicago Cubs. He played 4 seasons in the Cubs organization. After his playing days, he went on to become a pitching instructor at the prestigious Pro Player Baseball Academy. He then accepted the position of pitching coach at St. Peter’s. Coach Weber will be invaluable to this years staff as he guides a talented group of varsity pitchers.
