Eight Prep seniors have earned recognition in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program: Semifinalist Akshat Agarwal, and Commended Students Horace Anderson, Evan Briggs, Yixang Chen, Dhrona Mohan, Michael Shipman, Kevin Shull, and Steven Vago.

Akshat was among the approximately 16,000 students nationwide who were announced this month as semifinalists in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship program. Semifinalists are among the top scorers in each state, from a pool of more than 1.5 million students who took the PSAT/NMSQT in the fall of 2021 during their junior year. Only about 1% of high school seniors who take the PSAT each year attain semifinalist standing in the competition.

Semifinalists are invited to continue in the competition by completing a detailed application process that evaluates candidates’ academic performance, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and other honors and awards received. Based on those criteria, along with application essays and recommendations from school officials, the pool will be further narrowed to Finalists and then Scholars, with those announcements to come in the spring of 2023.

Prep’s seven Class of 2023 Commended Students Commended Students were recognized for scoring among the top 50,000 students in the nation on the 2021 PSAT, having shown outstanding academic promise by placing in the top 3% of scores nationwide.
