On Wednesday afternoon, the Prep community heard from Richard Guerry, Founder and Executive Director of the Institute for Responsible Online and Cellphone Communication (IROC2). Mr. Guerry’s presentation dealt with cyber safety and security, a topic of particular interest to anyone with an Internet connection…and anyone who is (or cares about) a high school student in 2020!
Mr. Guerry spoke to Prep’s students about their role as the first generation to come of age with the power of ease-of-access to the roughly 7.5 billion people in this world, all in the palm of their hands. Digital devices that include everything from phones to computers to internet-connected sunglasses all allow us to communicate instantly with anyone, anywhere. He spoke to them about the responsibility and pitfalls that come along with that kind of technology, to be sure, but also the “awesome opportunities” it can create so long as we all keep in mind that everything we do online and in the world of social media can be “Public and Permanent.”
He argued that simply saying “don’t use social media” or presenting examples of what not to do misses the point, and instead presented the digital realm as a space to ” show the world how awesome you are,” citing examples of people who had gained social media fame for doing something positive.
