Prep’s Class of 1969 came home to Grand & Warren last weekend for a celebration 50 years in the making. A variety of activities, spread over two days, gave the newest class of Prep Cepheans a chance to catch up with old friends and get reacquainted with life at Prep.
A formal sit-down dinner dance kicked off the weekend, on Friday night, as alumni and their spouses gathered together at Maritime Parc in downtown Jersey City. Cocktail hour and dinner on the top floor offered the perfect view of the New York City skyline, downtown Jersey City’s diverse architecture, and Prep’s Perkins Athletic Center, which was all a reminder that much has changed around Grand and Warren since the late ’60s. As the night went on, the alumni were given a chance to hear talks from class president Ken Mahon, ’69, Prep alumni director Mike Murcia, ’08, Prep vice president Jim Horan, ’70, and Prep president Dr. Michael Gomez, ’91.
Saturday night saw the alumni return to Prep for campus tours, led by a group of Freshman and Sophomore scholarship recipients. The tours led the groups to Prep’s Hammer Heritage Room for Mass, celebrated by Fr. Tony Azzarto, S.J., who was happy to make the trip from Fordham University in the Bronx. After Mass, guests moved over to the O’Keefe Commons for cocktails and dinner. Along with celebrating 50 years as alumni, and sharing fond memories of their days at Prep, the Class of ’69 commemorated the endowment of the Class of 1969 50th Reunion Scholarship– an effort that saw $50,000 raised in just one week! This scholarship will benefit Prep’s tuition assistance program.
It’s no surprise such an achievement was reached so quickly. This weekend saw 67 members of the Class of ’69 return to Prep for their reunion, which accounts for 36% of their class, making this one of Prep’s biggest 50th Reunion groups!
