Since the earliest days of Jesuit education in 1548, Jesuit schools have traditionally welcomed the new school year by celebrating the Mass of the Holy Spirit, seeking inspiration and blessing for the challenges, opportunities, and experiences that lie ahead.
Among the new beginnings celebrated this year was the installation of Dr. Michael Gomez, ’91 as Prep’s 29th president. Three former Prep presidents were on hand to mark the occasion – Fr. Joe Parkes, S.J., ’62 presided, while the concelebrants included Fr. Jim Keenan, S.J. and Prep’s most recent former president, Fr. Ken Boller, S.J.
As usual, the end of the Mass saw a number of blessings for members of the Prep community who are taking on new roles this year: the new members of the faculty and staff, the student council, the Alumni Service Corps, the Campus Ministry Team, the freshman class, and the transfer students who are new to Prep this fall. These were followed by the installation ceremony, led by Fr. Parkes in his role as Provincial Assistant for Secondary and Pre-Secondary Education for the USA Northeast Province, along with Mr. Phil McGovern, Esq., ’76, P’11, the chair of Prep’s Board of Trustees. Drawing from the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius, Fr. Parkes and Mr. McGovern offered a prayer for Dr. Gomez and the Prep community as this new era begins.
