The St. Peter’s Prep track and field team once again showcased that it’s one of the best teams in the state as four individuals and the 4x800m relay placed in the top six at the prestigious NJSIAA Meet of Champions at the Bennett Center in Toms River.
Action kicked off in the long jump on Thursday where seniors Adonis McGee and Ayir Asante placed fifth and sixth, respectively. McGee jumped 22-0 feet to break his own school record and Asante jumped 21-8 feet to move up to #3 in indoor school history.
Sophomore Edwin Klanke led things off for the Marauders on Saturday in the 1600m. Klanke finished fourth place with a 4:17.32, breaking the former school record of 4:18.94 set 15 years ago by Hudson County Hall Of Famer Patrick Mellea (’04).
McGee came back from his long jump performance and placed fourth in the high jump with a 6-4 leap, matching his Bennett Center season best.
Senior Richie Luzzi-Liggins took home the top mark of the day, and highest individual finish for Prep since Najee Glass (’12), with a 22.11 in the 200m. That mark was good for a second place finish behind Mario Heslop of Franklin High School.
The 4x800m relay squad of Paul Ames (1:59.5), Rodolfo Sanchez (2:01.6) Chris Brooks (2:00.6) and Edwin Klanke (1:59.5) picked up the final medal for Prep. Their total time of 8:01.54 was good for a third place finish.
Gus Nations IV (51.92) finished 19th in the 400m while Luqman Gbadamassi (52.12) finished 25th overall in the same race. R.J Oben Jr. finished 11th in the shot put with a 49-6.75 toss.
the 4x400m relay squad of Luzzi-Liggins (51.1), Nations IV (53.1), Joey Morrone (51.9) and Gbadamassi (52.0) ran a total time of 3:28.68, good for ninth place.
The Marauders will now shift their focus and get ready for the New Balance Indoor Nationals. The meet will take place at the New Balance Track and Field Center in New York, NY on March 8-10.
