Richard Torres, Jr., ’19 was among the approximately 16,000 students nationwide who were announced this month as semifinalists in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship program. Semifinalists represent the top scorers in each state, among more than 1.6 million students who took the PSAT/NMSQT in the fall of 2017 during their junior year, and less than 1% of high school seniors in the U.S. attain semifinalist standing in the competition.

Richard, along with his fellow semifinalists, will be invited to continue in the competition by completing a detailed application process that evaluates candidates’ academic performance, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and other honors and awards received. Based on those criteria, along with application essays and recommendations from school officials, the pool will be further narrowed to Finalists and then Scholars, with those announcements to come in the spring of 2019.
