Prep welcomed the season of Lent on Wednesday morning, as the school community gathered for an Ash Wednesday prayer service.
Ms. Emily Fencik, typically found directing Vox as they provide liturgical music at Prep's Masses and prayer services, took on a more visible role, as she offered a reflection on her experience of Lent. Growing up as the daughter of a Russian Orthodox priest (Fr. John Fencik, '70, P'98 – better known in Prep Hockey and Tennis circles simply as "Padre"), she explained, it was easy to view Lent as a series of bothersome rules to follow. "But that's the point," she said. "I kept making this about myself, and losing sight of what was important." Instead, Lent is an opportunity to "take a step back, and re-evaluate your approach," re-centering our spiritual development as an athlete or artist might do in pursuit of optimal performance.
