Prep Golf Wraps Up Impressive Season
May 16, 2013
First year teacher and head golf coach Ryan O'Flaherty knew he had a good group when he first took over the Prep golf team in March. Still, Coach O'Flaherty couldn't have imagined guiding the team to the school's first-ever undefeated golf season at 12-0. That is exactly what the team accomplished with a win over NJ #2 ranked Bergen Catholic to close out the regular season last week.
En route to the perfect 12-0 season, the team, currently ranked #4 in the state by The Star-Ledger, knocked off ranked teams in Don Bosco Prep, Westfield, St. Joe's Metuchen, Tenafly, and finally Bergen Catholic. The balanced team saw many low scorers throughout the season, with upperclassmen seniors Jake Byram, Michael Rojas and Sean Purcell and junior Kieren Purcell joined by a trio of talented sophomores in Paolo Matti, TJ Kurzcan, and Danny Harcourt.
On Monday, the team competed in a loaded Non-Public North Section at Valley Brook County Golf Course that included #2 Bergen Catholic, #3 Delbarton, and #15 Seton Hall Prep. The Marauders fell short of their goal for a Sectional Title and finished 3rd after the long 18-hole tournament. Sophomore Paolo Matti shined, however, and shot 76 on the day to qualify within the top 5 individual performers to advance to next Monday's Tournament of Champions.
Congratulations to the team on an impressive 12-0 season and good luck to Paolo in next week's TOC!
Baseball Advances to Hudson County Tournament Final
May 16, 2013
The varsity baseball team, ranked #8 in NJ by The Star-Ledger this week, has improved to 22-3 and punched a ticket to the Hudson County Tournament Final for the 2nd straight season with a 6-5 win over cross-town rival Hudson Catholic. The Marauders used a rally in the bottom of the 7th inning to come back from down 2 runs down last night in the semifinals. With runners on 2nd and 3rd base and down to the final out and strike of the game, Anthony Pacillo reached his bat out to protect himself from a potential called strike-three. The ball quickly scooted through a hole between the 3rd basemen and shortstop and chaos ensued as the Marauders plated 2 runs to erase a 5-4 deficit and walk-off to the finals.
These late-game heroics came at the heels of Hudson's own 2-out rally in the top of the 7th inning as they too plated 2 runs with a single off relief pitcher Danny Cooney to erase a 4-3 Prep lead.
The Marauders will now try to avenge last year's heartbreaking HCT finals loss to Marist. This time they will face an unfamiliar foe in 6-seeded Weehawken, who advanced to the finals behind upset wins over 3-seed North Bergen and 2-seed Bayonne. Senior Ryan O'Connor will likely get the start for the Marauders and boasts a 6-0 record and 1.02 ERA. O'Connor had a strong outing on Monday in a 10-0 Quarterfinals win over Union City and has gone at least 5 innings in all 6 of his starts this season.
The offense will look to provide solid run support behind a balanced attack. The Marauders have been led by Junior shortstop TJ Ward (.452 avg) but also send 6 other starters to the plate with above .300 averages and 20+ hits. Weehawken lefty ace Sal Mendez will likely get the start and look to thwart the Marauder attack. Mendez posted an 11 strikeout shutout in a 3-0 win over North Bergen on Monday and has been dubbed one of the best pitchers in Hudson County.
The Hudson County Tournament final will be played at 2pm on Saturday, May 18th, at Ed "Faa" Ford Field at the Caven Point Athletic Complex in Jersey City.

Prep Crew & Rugby Updates
April 15, 2013
The crew and rugby teams are already deep into their seasons. We'll take a minute to update both programs this week:
Rugby is off to a tough 1-3 start after 2 close, heart-breaking loses. The team opened the season with a big win over Strake Jesuit College Prep (Houston, TX) but has since dropped the last 3 contests to Dallas Jesuit College Prep (Dallas, TX), Morris, and Christian Brothers Academy. The team will look to bounce back with a home match this Sunday vs. Delbarton (1pm) and then a rescheduled trip down to St. Augustine on 4/30.
Crew has been competing since March 16th. So far they have traveled to Camden, Lenape Lake Springs, Philadelphia, and Leonia, NJ. Last week, in the 2nd Manny Flick race, the Junior 4+ took 1st in their heat and had the fastest time overall out of 25 boats. This past weekend the team competed well at the North Jersey Championships; results are below:
- Junior 4+ and Junior 8+ both took gold by defeating Don Bosco, Kearny, Nutley, Bellville, Rumson, and Ranney.
- Senior double took 3rd place behind Don Bosco and St. Joe's
- Lightweight Double took 2nd behind Don Bosco
The team also had a good outing on Sunday at the 4th Manny Flick:
- Junior 4+ won for 2nd straight week
- Junior 8+ took 3rd by edging out Fordham Prep
- Novice 8 took 3rd behind Fordham Prep
- Lightweight 4+ and Senior Double both placed 2nd
All boats are now preparing for the state championships on April 27th in Camden, NJ. Good luck to the crew team!
Week 1 Recap & Initial State Rankings
April 9, 2013
Last week was a busy and exciting time for the numerous student-athletes who participate in spring sports, their coaches, and all of our fans. The season began with a bang for the Marauders and many of our teams are out to very fast starts. The first week of competition also coincides with the first release of the team-specific Star-Ledger Top 20 rankings, and Prep now boasts 3 teams ranked within the top 20.
Golf is out to an impressive 3-0 start with wins over Westfield, Tenafly, and Paramus. This quick start has propelled the team to a #8 ranking in the state. Baseball comes in this week ranked #10 in NJ. This is a 5-spot jump for the team after an initial preseason rank of #15. In the first week of competition the Marauders have posted a 5-0 record behind a balanced offense and strong starting pitching. Volleyball has also been fast out of the gate. The Marauders have posted a 3-0 record over the first week with a key win over county and sectional rival Bayonne. The team also recorded 5 wins in pool play on Saturday in the Bloomfield Tournament. In the first NJ Top 20 volleyball rankings, The Star-Ledger pins Prep in the #12 spot.
Unranked Lacrosse is off to a 2-1 start after a heart-breaking triple-overtime loss vs. Cranford in the opening week. The team bounced back to defeat Ramapo and pull back above .500. Tennis is also unranked but posted a 2-0 record with county wins over Dickinson and Kearny.
Our spring sports have also expanded with two new sub-varsity teams for this season! Frosh lacrosse recorded a win in their inaugural game vs. Randolph last week. The team is slated to play an 8-game schedule in their first season. JV golf also recorded a 'W' in a tiebreaker situation vs. Westfield in their first match.
Congrats to all of the spring sports teams on a great start so far!

Baseball Spring Training a Huge Success
March 29, 2013
The varsity and junior-varsity baseball teams traveled to Myrtle Beach last week to spend several days of spring training at The Ripken Experience. The teams boarded a bus and took the long drive down to South Carolina to escape the harsh and unpredictable March weather for just a few days and be able to focus on baseball and team building. Both squads faired well in multiple scrimmages, and the experience is one that will quickly pay off throughout the upcoming season.
The Jersey Journal released their preseason preview of the team this morning: Losses haunt St. Peter's Prep baseball team but also provide lessons.
